Very informative. My father,Wilmer List Sigelko, searved at Fleet Hospital 114 during the war. One of the pictures I have is of him and some of his friends (walker, Walters, and Simmons) standing in front of the same sign (Fleet Hospital 114) pictured on this page.

I was a witness to the sinking of the USS Underhill. I was a 96th Quartermaster Co., 96th inf. Div., truck driver on board LST 739 (I think). Getting old. I turned 80 this year, 2002.

I have been to several sites regarding the heroic efforts all the servicemen made that served on this ship. I am curious as to who this ship was named after. Being an Underhill myself this has drummed up some curiousity. If anyone has any information on this matter I would greatly appreciate it.

I have visited this site many times. It is in a way for me, a special rememberance to my dad, Harold R. DeAtley, who was a surviver of the U.S.S. Underhill. Daddy died in 1985, and I still miss him. This wonderful web site is such a heart warming tribute to ALL the men on board this ship, and yet it is so very special to me, because it lets me sit back and remember how my dad would occasionally start telling his tales of life on board ship. I guess you could say, in a special sort of way it helps keep my dad alive in some small way.

I enjoy coming back every now and again just to see all the new things you have added, and learn even more about this ship and the men that served on board.

Thanks once again for such a WONDERFUL web site.

I WAS JUST RESEARCHING MY NAME AND CAME ACCROSS THE USS UNDERHILL. I WAS SURPRIZED, AS I NEVER BEFORE HEARD OF IT. HOPEFULLY I WILL NOW LEARN MORE. THANKS FOR KEEPING THE MEMORY OF HER ALIVE. MY DAD WAS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL SEABEES AT THE ONSET OF WW11. IN THE PACIFIC HE BEGAN IN THE ALEUTIANS AND ENDED IN GUAM. HIS BROTHER EDWARD UNDERHILL WAS A BOMB WING COMMANDER IN THE ETO. LATER IN THE PACIFIC HE HAD THE ENOLA GAY OUTFITTED WITH HEAVY DUTY LANDING GEAR. HE CONTINUED HIS CAREER IN THE AIR FORCE RETIRING AS A LT. GEN WITH 39 YEARS OF SERVICE. HE PASSED AWAY IN 94' AND IS BURIED IN ARLINGTON. TAKE CARE AND KEEP THE MEMORIES ALIVE

I have just discoved the web page for the Underhill. It is fantastic! I am the son of Lt. Floyd Powell Carrington who was killed when the Underhill went down 24-7-45. I was 2 years old when that happened and do not remember ever seeing my father. My mother, Sue, has told me a great deal about him and his service on the Underhill. She is still living in Parsons, TN and is doing well. She never remarried and I am their only child. I would love to hear from some of the survivors that may remember my father. I am told that he was a lot of fun to be around. It would be incredible to learn more about him from some of his shipmates
It is wonderful that some many people remember the men of the Underhill and honor them with this web page.

I wanted to say that Rodger Crum will be missed greatly.
He was interesting to talk to about all the Underhill concerns. It was his work that started the reunions again in the 80's and his help in creating the website along with Jay. He will be in our hearts for a long time. Maybe he and my Dad are having a conversation on the fantail!

I have been interested in his experiences on the ship, but until recently he has tended not to want to talk about it. Of course, we were much with the Underhill, its crew, and families as 7/24/2002 came, and went, and everyday! For the last hour, I've been downloading printed copies for those of us who are benefactors of the bravery, dedication, and heroics of the Underhill crew, and for youngsters in school who are learning "Freedom Isn't Free," war isn't a game, American History, and who they owe for the good life they enjoy by such studies. This is to give a little more detail on Peggy's note dated April 17. Georgia Newcomb, widow of LCDR Robert M. Newcomb, died peacefully in her sleep on April 15, 2002, at age 105. My wife (her oldest granddaughter) and I had visited her a few days earlier and had a pleasant time together. She thought highly of the men of the Underhill and was pleased that you remembered her. Although not immune to the effects of advanced age on her vision and hearing, she was blessed to avoid chronic debilitating illness. According to her wishes her body was cremated and the ashes interred at Nut Plains Cemetery in Guilford, Connecticut. Yesterday (May 5, 2002) we had a graveside memorial service attended by many family and friends, including a great-great-granddaughter. We rejoice in her memory and are glad to have known her.

The USS UNDERHILL was our escort from Seeadler Harbor, Manus Island, Admiralty Islands, to San Pedro Bay, Leyte Island, P.I., May 1945. My ship was the USS General M. B. We are especially interested in hearing from children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins of Underhill survivors, or of those who were lost on July 24, 1945. We'll be putting out a new mailing list soon which will be available to anyone interested. This may help some of you get in touch with fellows who can tell you about your relatives.
It was six years ago today that my husband, CBM Dace was laid to rest. He was so proud of all crew and would be delighted that the special citation for the crew finally came through.

assistant to Don Bellisario. It was through
her efforts that the information about the
Underhill was read. Executives are "swamped",
in her words with this material. The Underhills
story was one of many that are similar because of battle
action, but special to us because we lost many

To all our Underhill family: I'm pleased to report that I just left John Maki at the hospital and he's doing fine and anxious to get home! Doctor says he'll be able to run the Zamboni again soon. Surgery went great. (He says he's STILL the best damn fireman in the Navy!)

I signed this way back in Aug. of 98, man how time flies!! I have resigned to give my updated e-mail address and to see if anyone knows how to get hold of TOMKOWIAK, FLORIAN J.
I saw his name on the survivors list and remembered it immediately. Daddy (Harold R. DeAtley) used to mention this man every now and again. Would just like to tell him, he had been remembered very fondly, by my dad.

On the wall above where he sat in our home town church, there is a plaque for Joseph E. Ott, who went down with the Underhill. I looked at it again the other day at church and decided I'd like to know more about this sad day, so I came to my computer. I usually don't have much luck when I try to look something up and was surprised and pleased at what I found. Keep up the good work and I will return again. Joe was single and had two sisters and 3 nephews. I was hoping I would find somebody from his family had been looking for more information on the USS Underhill.

My uncle served aboard the USS Kenyon, the sister ship to the USS Underhill. I was always interested in his stories, and he has sinced passed away, and now I have access to the computer and was looking up the ships. The JAG episode was incredible. I am CBM Stanley Dace's grandson. I couldn't believe how much they showed his name and
commented on it. I CAN'T WAIT for the Underhill show. I have space on the same tapes to record that one as well.

Hi again Rodger and Gang! My oldest son, Timothy, (grandson of John D. Houglin, DE 682) is contemplating following in his grandfather's footsteps and enlisting in the Navy! I am so proud! Great resource and information center for everyone with ties to the Underhill and related navy concerns. My father was Stanley Dace and a chief aboard the Underhill. I am new to the internet and do not yet know the exact e-mail address to give. However you can reach me at 99 wildwood terrace Sullivan, Missouri 63080. It was hard for my father to tell what happened the day the Underhill was sunk. We did not know much until a few years before he died. We never heard him complain I suppose he was grateful to see America again and live a normal life. We do know that the Underhill was special to him and its crew. I have been in contact with my representatives in Congress to look into a possible citation for the ship's crew for honor under fire. Senator Ashcroft has been successful in getting awards for Joe Manory and Stanley Dace. If anyone remembers hearing 55 years ago about a possible ship's citation please let us know. Cheryl Jones

I truly enjoyed learning about the USS Underhill. My uncle, Baxter Wayne Garrett, was killed that day on
24 July 45. It was great finally learning about what happened, as almost all my kin on my uncle's side has
passed and I had no real way to learn about his navy life and those who perished with him. Thank you for the
site, and I would enjoy any e-mail from other family members, especially any of the survivors of that day that
may have know him.

Do you have any letters written by you or your family during the time you or they served in World War II? If so, I need your help!

I am researching a book entitled World War II Letters edited by Walter Cronkite, which is a collection of letters from servicemen and women to their friends, families, or sweethearts back home. This book is aimed at capturing the war as seen through the eyes of participants around the world. It will also depict the daily life of WWII soldiers. World War II Letters will have letters from soldiers from every country involved in the Second World War. WWII Letters will be published by Knopf next year.

I would love to publish letters written by servicemen and women from all over the world in the book and hope that you will take this chance to commemorate an important time in world history.

Please note that at this time we are not looking for photos, other war memorabilia, or letters written from the home front to servicemen and women, but if the publisher decides later that it is something they want to include, I will be sure to be in touch with you again.

Also, please note that I am looking for letters that have not been previously published in any form. I must have either the letter writer�s permission or someone who is able to give permission to reprint the letter(s) in Mr. Cronkite�s collection. (If the excerpt/letter is selected to be included in the book, a permission letter will be sent at a later date.) Please try to include the letter writer�s rank, circumstances surrounding the time the letter was written, details of soldier�s tour of duty, etc.basically, any additional information that would add to the letter. Also, please include your complete contact information so that I can stay in touch and let you know the progress of the book. If the letter is not written in English and you can translate it, that would be wonderful; if not, we will get a translation done. Lastly, please send only legible, photocopied letters before the end of July, which is our deadline.

I am the grandson of CBM Stanley W. Dace, and Ruth Dace. I was recently reading an article in the magazine Men's Journal
about the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis and it mentioned the Underhill and it's sinking. I was so excited I asked the person
who cuts my hair, which is where I was looking at the magazine, to seeif she could find it. She couldn't find that copy of it, but she got
6 brand new copies of it for everyone in the family. Just thought everyone would like to know that the Underhill made into a
magazine.

my father, levi c. patterson was wounded (broken shoulder) in 1945 while serving aboard the uss underhill. he is 87 years old and living at morningside home here in sumter, south carolina. i have been told of the underhill all my life and tomorrow being father's day, i have printed this entire site for him. just last week he sent a post card to a guy that lost a leg on the underhill. the address was 55 years old but this friend of his still lived there in his mother's house !! my dad received a phone call from him and i can remember my father telling me, that this brave man wounded, had to free himself with his pochet knife. the "USS UNDERHILL" has always been on my mind and although i was only two years old in 1945 i can still feel the experience. my father is still the major factor of our family and even today when i go deep sea fishing i'm on the "lookout" for jap subs...........doug patterson

THIS IS A WONDERFUL SITE THAT BRINGS BACK MANY MEMORIES. IT WAS QUITE A SHAME THAT THIS SHIP WAS HIT SO SOON BEFORE THE WAR ENDED. I WAS ON PC1251 AND RECEIVED SUPPLIES FROM HER THE DAY BEFORE SHE WAS SUNK. WE TALKED TO THE CREW AS WE SAILED ALONG SIDE. WE WERE SEARCHING FOR AND CHASED THE ONE MAN SUBS IN THE AREA BEFORE THE SINKING. AFTER MY SHIP PC1251 BECAME THE CONVOY LEADER AFTER THE UNDERHILL WAS SUNK. I WILL NEVE FORGET THIS SHIP AND HER CREW.

My Father was Howard Brown A brave man who served aborad the USS Underhill.Dad went into trucking after the war,and he and I would spend my summer trucking around the country.He never spoke of that last day aborad the Underhill untill 1964,we were in the middle of nowhrer about 0200.He told me A story of great bravey and sadness.As a vet myself who saw too much I thank GOD for those who gave all and for us who walked away.Us A proud few who know of the brave men of the USS Underhill.My father passed ayway in 1965 I was 14years old.He's with his ship mates.GOD BLESS THEM. How did you find us: "OTHER"? Oh, YES! We were there, together, that fateful night--it has taken fifty years of searching, and the computer, to get in touch with those I had felt perished in my place, and the families of those who did not survive. Were your ears itching yesterday--isn't that supposed to mean someone was talking about you? I was! In the sermon at the Daytona Beach Church of Christ, the congregation heard, some heard again, about looking over with binoculars, waving, at the young men waving to us from the Underhill, as they went back to engage the mother sub: those faces that will forever be in my memory, my dreams, my beyond-spoken gratitude. We are inseperatably clinked for all eternity!

For others, similarly linked to the Underhill, for whom Memorial Day is spelled, in large part, UNDERHILL, I send greetings as well to my shipmates on the LST 647--THE JACKPOT! Looking through the log shared with me by Jack Thornberry, shared by me with the Navy Memorial, I see that on Memorial Day in 1945, we arrived back at I.E. Shima. We first hit the beach there April 16th, 1945. Scenes of action on the TV today brings back of lot of memories. I just want to say "Hello," to any of you who are still around. I drove one of the L.C.V.P.s, also was Acting Chaplain. I am a minister for the Daytona Beach Church of Christ, at Daytona Beach, Florida. I hope things are going well with you, and if you are down my way, give me a call, and how about an email contact now?

Is there anyone out here who was evacuated from the beach of I.E. Shima to the hospital ship HOPE? We transported injured who had just had sulfa powder poured in their wounds, and morphine, and took them to the hospital ship: I never had the first word of complaint that we had hit a wave too hard, or were going too fast. I have wished for information on what had happened next for each of those men. Anyhone know?

This is a good collection of observations. We enjoyed visiting the site. I was communications officer on LST 768 and during the engagement, I was at my station on the flying bridge, had radio contact with Underhill and was in a catbird seat to observe the run by Underhill and her destruction and the movements of the convoy and escorts. We were designated as the vessel to receive survivors and get them to Guian, Samar in the Philippines. The rest of the convoy went on to Layte.

I love to visit your site because I can see the excellent picture of the Underhill. I posted a message about my father's ship a few weeks ago, USS Earl V. Johnson, DE-702 (Buckley class), which also encountered the kaitens of I-53 on August 4, 1945. Seeing the Underhill's picture gives me a good feeling because of course it looks just like my father's ship. I know half of your men made the supreme sacrifice and it could have been my father's ship as well. For this reason, my father and I talk about and think about the Underhill often. Today, my father just returned from Boston, where an 80 year old shipmate just got married, which just goes to show: Old sailors never die!

My second cousin William J. Ferrell was on the Underhill with his buddy James W. Cannon the part of the ship William was
on sunk and the part that James was on stayed afloat....so I was always told. Does anyone know if Mr. James Cannon is still alive?
