Bob Netko <rnetko@msn.com>
from Minneapolis, Mn,
I was an Electronic Technician crewman aboard LST 991 and was an eyewitness
when the Underhill was sunk. I am 78 now but will to the best of my memory
describe what we saw. July 24th was a clear sunny morning and I was up
on our ships bridge having coffee with the voice radioman, when we saw
a plane out on the eastern horizon at about 0830. We thought it was a
Jap Dinah and the radioman reported it to the Underhill and was told that
they had it spotted. We went to GQ for some time but when the plane took
no hostile action we went back to normal routine. Around noon our screening
force started getting sonar contacts indicating there were Jap subs around
and they started hunting the subs and dropping depth charges. Since an
LST has a maximum flank speed of 14 knots and it's only armament was 20
and 40mm surface guns, we could only continue steaming as directed by
the Task Group Commander and hope that our screening ships could protect
us. We also saw a floating mine sail by our ship about 30 yards out, which
we were later informed was a dud. Around 1530 the radioman on the Underhill
shouted, "we see one dead ahead, we're going in to ram him!!!" At this
time the Underhill was about 500 yards aft of our starboard beam sailing
in the same direction. There was then a tremendous explosion and the whole
front half of the Underhill disappeared and the stern half tipped up.
After that most of the screening craft set about rescueing the survivors
while the rest continued hunting the subs but that was pretty much the
end of the action and rescue operations continued the rest of the day.
By 1900 we could no longer see the stern half but could hear the gunfire
when it was sunk by order of Fleet Command.
The following day
a PBY float plane came out and took some of the badly wounded back to
Manila while the dead were given burials at sea with short services by
the ships Captains I believe our ship buried 9 men.
I didn't
know anything else about the Underhill, but for 59 years I have thought
about them now and then, thinking how tragic it was to happen when the
war was essentialy over. I finally decided today to look for the U.S.
Underhill sinking on GooGle and found this wonderful web site. To any
of you still surviving I say thank you from the bottom of my heart for
making my long and fruitful life possible. MY wife and I have 7 chidren
and 16 Grandchildren. For the ones have died, both at sea and afterwards,
my wish is that they are resting in peace and perpetual life shines upon
them.

My cousin, Lieutenant Joseph N. Christie (Joseph's mother was my father's

grew
up with the stories about him, and from time to time I have been struck
(most recently in the Washington Post's coverage of the
opening of
the WWII Memorial) to read accounts from the survivors. The work of
those survivors -- and their descendants -- in preserving
the memory
of their ship and their shipmates is a moving and impressive tribute.

suicide sub torpedo the afternoon of July 25. We passed the spot about
noon today. One of the other ships picked up 4 bodies and gave them a

of the days he spent on the ship and at various ports, and of course of
the big event. He is eighty years old now and I'm going to try to get
him to go to the reunion this year. Thanks to all the sailors that defended
our great nation.

Thanks for putting this site together.
I am the nephew of Lester
Hughes, one of the many fine men who gave their lives on the Underhill.
My grandmother would have appreciated this site as much as I have
if she were still with us. She never knew the complete story of what happened
to my uncle or his shipmates which I always felt was tragic. I think the
details you have provided could have helped answer many of her questions
and helped her cope with her loss a bit easier. He was her eldest son
and a very honorable man who took care of and provided for his family
in the absence of a father. It is comforting to know he lived his final
days with a group of men who were every bit as honorable as himself.
I
cannot begin to understand the sacrifice he and his shipmates offered
that day in July, but it makes me proud to say I am related to Lester
and I will never forget his act of courage.
The information you have
put together here has helped his family a great deal, thank you for your
time and work, it has not gone to waste.

I have visited this site many times. It is in a way for me, a special
rememberance to my dad, Harold R. DeAtley, who was a surviver of the U.S.S.
Underhill. Daddy died in 1985, and I still miss him. This wonderful
web site is such a heart warming tribute to ALL the men on board this
ship, and yet it is so very special to me, because it lets me sit back
and remember how my dad would occasionally start telling his tales of
life on board ship. I guess you could say, in a special sort of way it
helps keep my dad alive in some small way.
I enjoy coming back
every now and again just to see all the new things you have added, and
learn even more about this ship and the men that served on board.
Thanks
once again for such a WONDERFUL web site.

I have just discoved the web page for the Underhill. It is fantastic!
I am the son of Lt. Floyd Powell Carrington who was killed when the Underhill
went down 24-7-45. I was 2 years old when that happened and do not remember
ever seeing my father. My mother, Sue, has told me a great deal about
him and his service on the Underhill. She is still living in Parsons,
TN and is doing well. She never remarried and I am their only child.
I would love to hear from some of the survivors that may remember my
father. I am told that he was a lot of fun to be around. It would be
incredible to learn more about him from some of his shipmates
It is
wonderful that some many people remember the men of the Underhill and
honor them with this web page.

work that started the reunions again in the 80's and his help in creating
the website along with Jay. He will be in our hearts for a long time.
Maybe he and my Dad are having a conversation on the fantail!

I hadn't been to the site in a little while, and am so impressed with
the latest additions. Of course, we were much with the Underhill, its
crew, and families as 7/24/2002 came, and went, and everyday! For the
last hour, I've been downloading printed copies for those of us who are
benefactors of the bravery, dedication, and heroics of the Underhill crew,
and for youngsters in school who are learning "Freedom Isn't Free," war
isn't a game, American History, and who they owe for the good life they
enjoy by such studies. Our undying gratitude! And warmest regards to
each! P.A. Arnold

This is to give a little more detail on Peggy's note dated April 17.
Georgia Newcomb, widow of LCDR Robert M. Newcomb, died peacefully in her
sleep on April 15, 2002, at age 105. My wife (her oldest granddaughter)
and I had visited her a few days earlier and had a pleasant time together.
She thought highly of the men of the Underhill and was pleased that you
remembered her. Although not immune to the effects of advanced age on
her vision and hearing, she was blessed to avoid chronic debilitating
illness. According to her wishes her body was cremated and the ashes interred
at Nut Plains Cemetery in Guilford, Connecticut. Yesterday (May 5, 2002)
we had a graveside memorial service attended by many family and friends,
including a great-great-granddaughter. We rejoice in her memory and are
glad to have known her.

This is for Beth Tracy. For those of you
that watch JAG, Beth Tracy
was the executive
assistant to Don Bellisario. It was through
her
efforts that the information about the
Underhill was read. Executives
are "swamped",
in her words with this material. The Underhills
story
was one of many that are similar because of battle
action, but special
to us because we lost many
who were dear to us. Don Bellisario and
Beth Tracy
saw something special in us... hopefully someday
the
Underhill's read story will be told . Thank you
Beth Tracy

, but he is considering getting a computer in his room, so he

any email others might like to write to Mr. P.
The homepage listed

it deserved it's own place, and gave it that special place.

that also for others to read.

I saw his name on

used to mention this man every now and again. Would just like to tell
him, he had been remembered very fondly, by my dad.
The homepage
address I put there is a link to a Spades team home page I made for my

with you all. It is quite lengthy 12 pages and takes a while to go through
but is a fun site too.

Underhill info and Thanks so very much to EVERONE that has participated

on this ship. All i can say is as an australian that has never been through
what the ppl on this ship had to encounter, i feel proud and privileged
to have seen this site and shared in the story. To Thomas Patterson, u
have a beautiful grandaughter that holes u in the highest regard and treasures
the memories u have left for her to pass on to her own children.

The JAG episode was incredible. I am CBM Stanley Dace's grandson. I
couldn't believe how much they showed his name and

I CAN'T WAIT for the Underhill show. I have space on the same tapes to
record that one as well.
What a tribute to those who lost there lives
and those who served on the Underhill.
Oh yes, about 2 weeks ago
on the History Channel, there was a special on the USS Indianapolis. They
mentioned the
Underhill. I am so proud to be an American where we
have men and women that give there lives for our freedom.

Hi again Rodger and Gang! My oldest son, Timothy, (grandson of John
D. Houglin, DE 682) is contemplating following in his grandfather's footsteps
and enlisting in the Navy! I am so proud! He is also an Underhill history
buff, and has written several school papers and talked about the Underhill.
He was very excited about the Underhill and JAG. The odd thing is this--the
date of October 17 (the airdate) is the 10th anniversary of my dad's death...almost
like he had something to do with the show!
I hope all of you are
doing fine, and each and everyone is in my prayers!

Great resource and information center for everyone with ties to the
Underhill and related navy concerns. My father was Stanley Dace and a
chief aboard the Underhill. I am new to the internet and do not yet know
the exact e-mail address to give. However you can reach me at 99 wildwood
terrace Sullivan, Missouri 63080. It was hard for my father to tell what
happened the day the Underhill was sunk. We did not know much until a
few years before he died. We never heard him complain I suppose he was
grateful to see America again and live a normal life. We do know that
the Underhill was special to him and its crew. I have been in contact
with my representatives in Congress to look into a possible citation for
the ship's crew for honor under fire. Senator Ashcroft has been successful
in getting awards for Joe Manory and Stanley Dace. If anyone remembers
hearing 55 years ago about a possible ship's citation please let us know.

Do you have any letters written by you or your family during the time
you or they served in World War II? If so, I need your help!
I
am researching a book entitled World War II Letters edited by Walter Cronkite,
which is a collection of letters from servicemen and women to their friends,
families, or sweethearts back home. This book is aimed at capturing the
war as seen through the eyes of participants around the world. It will
also depict the daily life of WWII soldiers. World War II Letters will
have letters from soldiers from every country involved in the Second World
War. WWII Letters will be published by Knopf next year.
I would
love to publish letters written by servicemen and women from all over
the world in the book and hope that you will take this chance to commemorate
an important time in world history.
Please note that at this
time we are not looking for photos, other war memorabilia, or letters
written from the home front to servicemen and women, but if the publisher
decides later that it is something they want to include, I will be sure
to be in touch with you again.
Also, please note that I am looking
for letters that have not been previously published in any form. I must
have either the letter writer’s permission or someone who is able to give
permission to reprint the letter(s) in Mr. Cronkite’s collection. (If
the excerpt/letter is selected to be included in the book, a permission
letter will be sent at a later date.) Please try to include the letter
writer’s rank, circumstances surrounding the time the letter was written,
details of soldier’s tour of duty, etc.basically, any additional information
that would add to the letter. Also, please include your complete contact
information so that I can stay in touch and let you know the progress
of the book. If the letter is not written in English and you can translate
it, that would be wonderful; if not, we will get a translation done.
Lastly, please send only legible, photocopied letters before the end of
July, which is our deadline.
If you have any questions about
this book, I would be happy to answer them. (E-mail is the best way to
reach me, and my address is tquinn@adlerbooks.com.)
I really
appreciate your help. Without your support, this book would not be possible.

from Daytona, Florida
How did you find us: "OTHER"? Oh, YES! We were there, together, that
fateful night--it has taken fifty years of searching, and the computer,
to get in touch with those I had felt perished in my place, and the families
of those who did not survive. Were your ears itching yesterday--isn't
that supposed to mean someone was talking about you? I was! In the sermon
at the Daytona Beach Church of Christ, the congregation heard, some heard
again, about looking over with binoculars, waving, at the young men waving
to us from the Underhill, as they went back to engage the mother sub:
those faces that will forever be in my memory, my dreams, my beyond-spoken
gratitude. We are inseperatably clinked for all eternity!
For
others, similarly linked to the Underhill, for whom Memorial Day is spelled,
in large part, UNDERHILL, I send greetings as well to my shipmates on
the LST 647--THE JACKPOT! Looking through the log shared with me by Jack
Thornberry, shared by me with the Navy Memorial, I see that on Memorial
Day in 1945, we arrived back at I.E. Shima. We first hit the beach there
April 16th, 1945. Scenes of action on the TV today brings back of lot
of memories. I just want to say "Hello," to any of you who are still
around. I drove one of the L.C.V.P.s, also was Acting Chaplain. I am
a minister for the Daytona Beach Church of Christ, at Daytona Beach, Florida.
I hope things are going well with you, and if you are down my way, give
me a call, and how about an email contact now?
Is there anyone
out here who was evacuated from the beach of I.E. Shima to the hospital
ship HOPE? We transported injured who had just had sulfa powder poured
in their wounds, and morphine, and took them to the hospital ship: I
never had the first word of complaint that we had hit a wave too hard,
or were going too fast. I have wished for information on what had happened
next for each of those men. Anyhone know?

This is a good collection of observations. We enjoyed visiting the site.
I was communications officer on LST 768 and during the engagement, I was
at my station on the flying bridge, had radio contact with Underhill and
was in a catbird seat to observe the run by Underhill and her destruction
and the movements of the convoy and escorts. We were designated as the
vessel to receive survivors and get them to Guian, Samar in the Philippines.
The rest of the convoy went on to Layte.

I love to visit your site because I can see the excellent picture of
the Underhill. I posted a message about my father's ship a few weeks ago,
USS Earl V. Johnson, DE-702 (Buckley class), which also encountered the
kaitens of I-53 on August 4, 1945. Seeing the Underhill's picture gives
me a good feeling because of course it looks just like my father's ship.
I know half of your men made the supreme sacrifice and it could have been
my father's ship as well. For this reason, my father and I talk about
and think about the Underhill often. Today, my father just returned from
Boston, where an 80 year old shipmate just got married, which just goes
to show: Old sailors never die!

Johnny Caskey was one of my closest friends. We graduated from Western
High School, Washington, D.C., in 1934. I was commanding officer of the
P.C. 1596, and one of the escorts, along with the Underhill, of a slow
convoy from Norfolk to Bizerte in July of 1944. I had the pleasure of
telling Johnny the good news that his wife Jane had given birth to a son,
who is now a practicing lawyer in Towson, Maryland. Johnny was one in

I found your web site while looking for a picture of the USS Underhill
for my grandson, Brendon Holland.
Brendon's preschool has been learning
about one letter of the alphabet each week, and next week is 'U' week.
My wife and I felt that a picture of the Underhill would be appropriate,
since my wife (Mary Newcomb
Holland) is a granddaughter (and Brendon
is therefore a great-great-grandson) of LCDR Robert Newcomb.
In case
you are interested, LCDR Newcomb's widow, Georgia Newcomb, is alive and
reasonably well at the

nearby Madison, CT, where my wife and I visit her almost every

My father's ship made contact with I-53 on August 4,1945. His ship,
USS Earl V Johnson DE-702(also a Buckley class DE)depth charged I-53.
I-53, suffering minor damage launched a kaiten at DE-702, making two passes
before exploding some distance away. This contact occurred off Okinawa.
My father and his shipmates only learned that this torpedo attack involved
a kaiten(manned torpedo) in 1995, when contacts and correspondences were
made with surviving crew members of I-53 in Japan. My father remembers
seeing the Underhill in port at some point during the war. I would like
to thank those gallant sailors of the Underhill, alive and dead, who kept
I-53 off that convoy that day, and who make me proud to be an American.
I salute you all. God Bless!!

I am Chief Stanley Dace's sister. Stan talked with me a great deal
about the Underhill. I asked him a few month before he died what he was
thinking when the ship was being sunk, he told me "Elaine, yes, I was
scared but that is when your training takes over and you don't have time
to think or be afraid". He was a true Navy man from the day he enlisted
until the day he died. Stan will always stand 12 feet tall in my mind,
he knew what hell war was and he also knew how to be a human thinking
person. I miss him so very much. He wouldn't miss the Reunion if at
all possible expense wise or job wise. He took one of my other sailor
brothers with him to the reunion one year. He loved all you guys on that

Rather surprised to find such a site. It would be interesting to learn
more.I have visited a few Us ships when visiting the States.
I felt
quite sad to come across the US> United States in Phili this year.

We would have enjoyed being at the reunion, and seeing the pictures
was "next best." Thanks to those who have made contact. What a link
we share! That night made us all family in the sense of sharing great
trauma, a slice of history! Each of our "todays," and "tomorrows," are,
in part, a tribute to their "yesterday!" With undying gratitude! E.E.A.

I think this is a great page and appreciate the improvements. As I have
said before, from the deck of an LST, this army guy saw the USS Underhill
hit.
There is a quick mention of the ship on "Battle of Okinawa
Anniversary Salute" page under "Fred's Adventures". Please give a look.

Looking up the Underhill for my Great-Uncle John Maki and stumbled upon
this page. Very nice and lots of information. I think you should have
more pictures of the reunions, like maybe get a group photo every year.

Hi Rodger and Jay!
As the daughter of a Underhill survivor(John
Houglin), I visit the website often. Thanks so much for keeping the site
up and running. I often stop by and it makes me feel close to dad, who
passed away in 1990. The new areas always provide me with information
that I would never had known had it not been for you.
My son
has been corresponding with one of the survivors of the Underhill, and
he feels a real connection with the man, who can provide him with a glimpse
of his Paw-Paws past.
Thanks so much--
Terri Houglin

I was a quartermaster aboard the USS Connolly DE 306. We were pulled
from convoy duty, enroute to Okinawa from the Philippines, to search for
the submarine that sunk the Underhill. Later we encountered a typhoon.

I find it somewhat strange that my father, PFC Thomas H. Underhill was
with the 96th Division on Leyte and Okinawa in late '44 and early '45.
He knew of the ship, but was not a part of the convoy. Any idea as to
how the young flyer received a ship namesake in such a short period of
time? SAU

James W. Cannon the part of the ship William was
on sunk and the part
that James was on stayed afloat....so I was always told. Does anyone know
if Mr. James Cannon is still alive?
