Harold E. Matter, 97, of Gaithersburg, MD passed away peacefully on Monday, January 9, 2023. Born on July 2, 1925, in Loyalton, PA, he grew up on his family’?s farm. In 1943, he enlisted in the navy and served in WWII aboard the DE USS Underhill until it was sunk in battle on July 24, 1945. Survivors from the ship held annual reunions at the US Naval Academy. He was the last of the survivors to attend the final reunion in 2019.
After the war, Harold attended Albright College before moving to Washington, D.C. to begin his career with the CIA. It was there that he met his future wife, Connie. Happily married for 66 years, they raised four children. They were early and active members of Faith United Methodist Church in Rockville, MD, joining when services were still being held at Farmland Elementary School. At Faith, Harold sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, ushered, attended and led weekly men’?s prayer breakfast meetings, served as Faith’?s treasurer and other council roles, participated in Faith’?s bowling league, and traveled the world with a group of friends from church—?visiting Alaska, Russia, Scandinavia, and other Western European countries. He enjoyed beach vacations with his family, golfing, reading, writing, and living at his new home in Asbury Methodist Village where he made many new friends.
Harold is survived by his children, Bruce E. Matter (Cindy), Keith E. Matter, Linda E. Dryden (Dale), 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Connie, brother Glenn E. Matter, and son Craig E. Matter.
Funeral services will be held at Faith United Methodist Church in Rockville, MD on Monday, January 16, 2023 at 11:00 am. The family will be receiving visitors in the Fellowship Hall following the service. ?
