Medals To Underhill Survivors

In mid November 1998 two survivors of the USS Underhill DE 682 received US Navy Medals that were long overdue.

Chief Boatswains Mate Stanley Winson Dace (recently deceased) received the BRONZE STAR MEDAL (WITH COMBAT V). The citation reads in part-By his exceptional leadership in the face of significant combat damage, steadfast courage, and selfless devotion to duty, Chief Petty Officer Dace reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The medal was mailed to his wife in Sullivan, MO.

Pharmacist’s Mate 3/c Joseph Francis Manory received the NAVY AND MARINE CORPS COMMENDATION MEDAL (WITH COMBAT V). The citation reads in part. (By his perseverance and the significant professionalism exhibited, petty officer, Manory saved many lives)

Through the efforts of Donald Kruse MM3/c (Underhill survivor) Joseph received his medal on the deck of the USS DE Slater.
